What is CONTACT Reassurance?

CONTACT Reassurance is a program that offers a daily check-up call from trained volunteers to senior citizens who live alone in Camden County, NJ. The purpose of this program is to provide support to seniors who wish to maintain independence in their own homes, avoiding the possibility of institutionalization. If a senior is hearing or speech impaired, a TTY (telecommunication device for the deaf) is loaned at no expense to the client.

How does the Program work?

Once a client is accepted into the program, they are paired with a volunteer. The volunteer then calls the client at a pre-arranged time each day to check on the client's well-being. If the telephone is not answered, the volunteer will initiage procedures to see that the client is safe. Many clients have expressed feeling peace of mind after becoming part of the Reassurance Program.

Program participants benefit by having access to County resources, increased socialization, encouragement to remain independent, and the confidence of knowing someone cares. Many volunteers are also seniors and enjoy the benefit of their lives having renewed purpose.

Statistics (1995):

* over 27,500 calls placed to seniors

* 188 clients were served
